What's On

[F, H & L] Hope

(I’m afraid there is no podcast of this talk)

Faith, Hope & Love

For our All Together Services this term we’re looking at 1 Corinthians 13:13 – these three things will last forever – faith, hope and love.

Today we were thinking about hope.

Dave said we’re like rubber bands – often we feel stretched, whether that is anxiety, stress, worry, feeling out of control and so on.  When a few of these come at the same time it can be crippling.

In Psalm 42:5 the psalmist writes:

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my God.
My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember you

The psalmist is feeling stretched and his solution is to remind his soul to “hope in God”, which unlike the normal usage of the word hope doesn’t mean, “fingers crossed that my uncertain future turns out favourably.”

Hope in God is grounded in God’s character, will, promises and power – all of which work in the favour of us, his children.

Romans 8:18-30 is all about hope.

  • Read through the passage in small chunks and look for things that would encourage us if we’re in the midst of feeling stretched.
  • What practical steps does it suggest?
  • The psalmist said to remember God, even when we’re feeling downcast.  What parts of this passage would be good to remember?
  • How do you feel about thinking of eternity to help you with current struggles?  Is it helpful for you or does it feel simplistic and unhelpful?

Dave gave everyone a rubber band, to put somewhere to remind them that God is with them in that place of stress.

  • Where did you put yours? (Or where would you have put it if you didn’t get a band?)
  • Why?  What’s going on there?
  • How can you support each other with this?
